The Infinity Saga begins in the 1940s with Steve Rogers, a scrawny volunteer who becomes Captain America through a super-soldier serum, only to be frozen in ice for decades. When he wakes in the modern world, he joins forces with Tony Stark, a billionaire weapons manufacturer who builds a high-tech suit after being captured by terrorists. Together with brilliant scientist Bruce Banner, who transforms into the Hulk, and the Asgardian god Thor, they form the Avengers under the direction of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury. Their first major test comes when Thor's adopted brother Loki steals the Tesseract, a cosmic cube that holds the Space Stone, and uses it to open a portal over New York City, leading to the Battle of New York.

As the saga unfolds, the heroes encounter the other Infinity Stones one by one. The Mind Stone appears in Loki's scepter, later used by Tony Stark to create Ultron, an AI that goes rogue and nearly destroys humanity.
