Groot is a member of the Flora colossi, a species of sentient tree-like beings from Planet X. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the original Groot was captured alongside Rocket Raccoon and imprisoned in the Kyln, a high-security space prison. The two had been partners in various heists across the galaxy, with Groot serving as Rocket's muscle and loyal companion. Their partnership was born from mutual need: Rocket's cunning and Groot's strength made them an effective team. In the climax of the first film, he sacrifices himself to protect the team from Ronan's ship's explosion, enveloping them in a cocoon of branches. The line 'We are Groot' marks his final words before he seemingly perishes. However, a surviving twig is planted by Rocket and grows into Baby Groot, whom James Gunn has confirmed is the original's son, raised by Rocket as an adoptive child.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baby Groot is mischievous and distractible, struggling to follow orders but ultimately helping the team defeat Ego. By Avengers: Infinity War, he has grown into an adolescent who befriends Thor and sacrifices his own arm to help forge Stormbreaker. He is one of the victims of the Blip, but returns in Avengers: Endgame for the final battle. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Groot finally speaks a full sentence for the first time, 'I love you guys', demonstrating his emotional growth.
