Overview
The Lost and Damned was Rockstar North's first attempt at episodic storytelling for Grand Theft Auto IV, and it remains one of the best. Instead of following immigrant Niko Bellic, you step into the boots of Johnny Klebitz, vice-president of The Lost MC, an outlaw motorcycle club that's been around since the 3D era of the series. The story runs parallel to the main game, meaning you'll see familiar events from a different angle. Johnny is trying to hold his chapter together while its president, Billy Grey, serves a prison sentence. But when Billy gets out, he's reckless and determined to plunge the club back into the heroin trade. The action takes place in Alderney, a new borough added for GTA IV that feels like a grimy New Jersey industrial suburb, full of strip clubs, warehouses, and biker bars.
Gameplay tweaks make this expansion feel distinct. Motorcycles handle better here than in the base game, with a new aiming system that lets you shoot while riding. You can also perform a wheelie for style points, though it's mostly for show. The missions are tighter and more focused on the club's internal drama. One standout mission has you escorting a drug deal while Billy argues with Johnny over the radio, setting up the explosive finale. The game also introduces gang territories, which you can defend from rival clubs in free roam. Multiplayer got new modes like Club Business and Own the Lot, where biker gangs fight over turf. These modes support up to 16 players and are still playable on Xbox 360 and PC through the Episodes from Liberty City disc.
Critical reception was stellar, with a Metacritic score of 90 for Xbox 360. IGN gave it 8.6/10, GameSpot 8.5, and Eurogamer a 9. The expansion won Best Downloadable Game at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards and was nominated for Best DLC at GameSpot's Best of 2009. It also got a nod for Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering at the D.I.C.E. Awards. Sales were solid: by March 2010, the Episodes from Liberty City disc had sold over 1.6 million copies, and digital downloads of both episodes exceeded 1 million on Xbox Live Marketplace by mid-2009. The Lost and Damned proved that single-player DLC could be both critically and commercially successful, influencing later Rockstar expansions like Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.
Gameplay
The Lost and Damned keeps the core cover-based shooting and driving from GTA IV but adds a biker twist. Motorcycles are the star here. You can now lean into turns, perform wheelies, and use a special aiming system that lets you fire a sawed-off shotgun or pistol while riding. The game also introduces gang territories scattered across Alderney and parts of Liberty City. These are marked on the map as your club's turf, and rival gangs will occasionally try to take them over. Defending them triggers a small-scale firefight with waves of enemies. It's optional but adds a sense of ownership.
Missions are more linear than the base game, with fewer branching paths but stronger set pieces. You'll ambush a heroin deal at a construction site, chase a traitor through the subway, and storm a warehouse full of Albanian mobsters. The game also includes new weapons like the automatic shotgun and the grenade launcher. The Euphoria physics engine makes every crash and gunshot feel weighty. Multiplayer modes like Club Business have teams competing to steal and deliver drugs, while Witness Protection tasks one player with surviving a gauntlet of assassins. These modes are chaotic and perfectly capture the biker gang vibe.
Story
Johnny Klebitz has been the vice-president of The Lost MC's Alderney chapter for years. When the story opens, he's picking up president Billy Grey from rehab. Billy is supposed to be clean, but he immediately starts pushing the club back into the heroin business with a deal involving the Pegorino crime family. Johnny wants to keep the club focused on legitimate work like protection and stolen goods, but Billy's arrogance and addiction spiral out of control. The tension between the two men drives the plot.
Along the way, Johnny gets involved with a woman named Ashley Butler, a junkie who sleeps around and causes trouble. She's also the link to the Pegorino family and the diamonds that appear in both the main game and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Johnny's brother, Michael, is a cop who disapproves of the biker lifestyle but helps Johnny when things get bad. The climax comes when Billy sells out the club to the police in exchange for immunity. Johnny and a few loyal members ambush Billy at a heroin deal, leading to a brutal shootout. Johnny kills Billy, but the club is destroyed. The final scene shows Johnny walking away from the wreckage, alone.
