Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
"A neon-soaked rise to power in a satirical 1980s Miami"
Overview
Released in October 2002, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City thrust players into a sun-drenched 1986 Miami inspired by the city's neon-soaked past. Developed by Rockstar North and published by their own label, this action-adventure title marked the series' shift from the gritty streets of Liberty City to a tropical paradise filled with palm trees and excess. Players step into the shoes of Tommy Vercetti, a gangster released from prison who must navigate a dangerous underworld after an ambush leaves his drug deal ruined. The narrative drives Tommy to build a criminal empire by dismantling rival factions, all while uncovering the truth behind the betrayal that set him on this path.
The game world spans two main islands connected by bridges, offering over 120 drivable vehicles ranging from sedans to helicopters. A defining feature involves purchasing properties across the map to generate passive income, which funds further expansion into drug trafficking and real estate speculation. The soundtrack curated by Johnny G. featured licensed tracks from artists like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode, capturing the synth-pop essence of the era through five distinct radio stations.
Gameplay
Players explore an open sandbox environment where they can freely roam the fictional Vice City or engage in structured missions. The core loop involves completing story objectives that advance the plot alongside side activities like taxi driving and paramedic runs. Combat relies on third-person shooting and melee attacks, while the wanted system escalates police response levels up to military-grade SWAT teams when players attract too much attention.
Economic management plays a key role as players buy businesses to earn daily revenue. This income stream allows for better equipment purchases and vehicle acquisition. The game features a dynamic day-night cycle that alters traffic density and NPC behavior, enhancing the immersion of the 1980s setting.
Story
Tommy Vercetti returns to the streets after a decade behind bars, tasked by his boss Sonny Forelli to secure a drug deal in Vice City. An immediate ambush by local rivals leaves him stranded without money or allies. He must quickly rebuild his reputation by taking control of various criminal enterprises including prostitution rings and drug labs.
The narrative unfolds through interactions with eccentric characters like film director Ken Rosenberg and rival gang leader Lance Vance. Tommy eventually confronts the masterminds behind the initial attack, consolidating his power over the city's underworld. The story draws heavy inspiration from 1980s media including Scarface and Miami Vice.
