Overview
October 22, 2001 marked a turning point in interactive entertainment when Grand Theft Auto III launched on the PlayStation 2. This release shifted the franchise from two-dimensional top-down perspectives to a fully realized three-dimensional world. Players took control of Claude, a silent protagonist waking up in Liberty City after a heist went wrong. The narrative thrust him into a brutal underworld where he had to survive betrayal and seek revenge against his former girlfriend, Catalina.
Liberty City served as a dense, fictionalized version of New York divided into three main islands: Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale. The game introduced a third-person camera that allowed players to explore freely on foot or drive hundreds of unique vehicles. Rockstar North built this environment using the RenderWare engine to deliver dynamic lighting and large-scale urban maps despite the hardware limitations of the time.
Gameplay
The core loop involves completing story-driven missions while engaging in free-roam chaos across the city. Players can switch between melee weapons, firearms, and explosives with a limited ammo system. Committing crimes attracts police attention that escalates through six levels of law enforcement response including helicopters and SWAT teams. The vehicle physics offered more realistic handling than previous entries allowing for varied driving experiences from sedans to motorcycles.
Story
Claude wakes up in an alley in Portland after a bank robbery turns into a massacre. His partner Catalina shoots him and leaves him for dead before fleeing with the money. He survives and begins climbing the criminal ladder by working for various factions like the Leone crime family. Throughout the journey he undertakes car thefts and assassinations to gain power. The conflict culminates in a final confrontation with Catalina who returns to finish what she started.
