    Overview

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, represents a bold expansion of Rockstar's open-world formula. Developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, this seventh installment in the series drops players into the fictional state of San Andreas, a sprawling recreation of California and Nevada circa 1992. The game follows Carl 'CJ' Johnson, a former gangster who returns to his hometown of Los Santos after his mother's murder. Finding his old street gang, the Grove Street Families, in disarray, CJ sets out to rebuild their power while navigating a world of corrupt cops, rival gangs, and political intrigue. The narrative draws heavily from real-life events: the Bloods and Crips rivalry, the crack epidemic, the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and the Rampart scandal. Rockstar conducted on-site research in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, and consulted locals like DJ Pooh to capture authentic street culture.

Gameplay retains the third-person perspective of its predecessors but expands the scope dramatically. The open world is divided into three distinct cities: Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas, each modeled after its real-world counterpart. Players can explore on foot or via a vast array of vehicles, from bicycles to fighter jets. The 75-person development team spent nearly two years building this world, which also includes rural countryside, deserts, and mountains. San Andreas introduced role-playing elements like customizable appearance, fitness levels, and gang territory warfare, adding depth to the sandbox experience. The game was released on Windows and Xbox in 2005, followed by enhanced versions and mobile ports in the 2010s, and a remastered collection in 2021.

    Gameplay

Players control Carl 'CJ' Johnson from a third-person perspective, navigating the vast open world on foot or using a variety of vehicles. The game world spans three major cities, Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas, along with surrounding rural areas, deserts, and mountains. San Andreas introduced several new RPG mechanics, allowing players to customize CJ's appearance, improve his physical attributes like stamina and muscle mass through exercise, and manage gang territories. A wide array of side activities, from driving and flying schools to dating non-player characters, offer diversions from the main story. The game supports 1-2 players.
