    Overview

Released in April 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV marked a seismic shift for the franchise by abandoning arcade-style physics for gritty realism. Players control Niko Bellic, an Eastern European war veteran who arrives in Liberty City hoping to escape his violent past. The narrative quickly traps him in a web of debt and betrayal involving powerful criminals, forcing a desperate struggle for survival within a dense recreation of New York City.

The game introduced the RAGE engine with its Euphoria physics system, allowing character reactions to violence and collisions to occur dynamically rather than through pre-scripted animations. This technical leap created a world where vehicles handled with weight and momentum, contrasting sharply with previous entries. While praised for its mature storytelling and atmospheric depth, the game faced criticism for camera controls and performance optimization on older hardware.

    Gameplay

Niko Bellic navigates a world governed by realistic driving mechanics where vehicles possess significant weight and momentum. The city of Liberty City spans three main islands representing Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn and Queens, alongside the state of Alderney based on Newark. A dynamic AI system manages traffic patterns and pedestrian behaviors while a day-night cycle influences crime rates and business operations.

    Story

Niko Bellic arrives in Liberty City searching for the American Dream after being promised a life of luxury by his cousin Roman. Instead he finds Roman drowning in debt to local loan sharks and entangled with petty criminals. Throughout the campaign Niko becomes involved with figures like mobster Mikhail Faustin and corrupt businessman Dimitri Rascalov while exploring themes of immigration and the corruption of the American Dream.

The narrative culminates in a final mission where players must choose between two divergent endings determined by earlier relationship choices. Selecting either 'Deal' or 'Revenge' dictates the fate of key characters and concludes the story in one of two distinct ways.
