    Overview

Grand Theft Auto Online is the persistent multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V, developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Released on October 1, 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it later expanded to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (November 18, 2014), Windows (April 14, 2015), and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (March 15, 2022). The game is set in the fictional state of San Andreas, primarily in the city of Los Santos and its surrounding countryside, based on Southern California.

Players create a customizable silent protagonist and rise through the criminal underworld by completing cooperative missions, heists, and various side activities. The open world supports up to 30 players simultaneously, allowing for both cooperative and competitive gameplay. The narrative takes place both before and after the events of the single-player campaign, with many characters from that story returning as mission givers. Players can purchase and manage businesses, engage in races, deathmatches, and other adversarial modes, or simply explore the world freely.

The game launched with significant technical issues, including mission-breaking bugs and character data loss, which drew criticism. Reviewers were divided, with some calling it a disappointment due to lack of direction and repetitive missions, while others praised its scope and freedom. Over time, frequent free content updates improved the experience significantly. The Heists update in 2015 was a turning point, adding complex multi-stage cooperative missions that were widely acclaimed. The game has maintained a large active player base for over a decade, receiving regular updates that introduce new vehicles, properties, weapons, and gameplay modes.

    Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto Online offers a sandbox experience where players can freely roam the open world of San Andreas. The core loop involves completing missions for NPCs, which range from simple deliveries to elaborate heists requiring coordination among multiple players. Heists are multi-stage operations with specific roles like driver, gunman, and hacker, rewarding substantial payouts upon completion.

Players can purchase properties such as apartments, garages, and businesses like nightclubs, cocaine lockups, and vehicle warehouses. These generate passive income and unlock new mission types. The game features a robust character customization system, allowing players to change appearance, clothing, and tattoos. Vehicles are a major focus, with hundreds of cars, motorcycles, aircraft, and boats available for purchase and modification at shops like Los Santos Customs.

Adversary modes include races, deathmatches, capture the flag, and unique modes like Sumo and Slasher. The world is populated with random events, such as armored truck robberies and smugglers' planes, offering spontaneous opportunities for profit. The in-game economy uses two currencies: cash and shark cards (purchased with real money) to buy cash. The game also includes a passive mode to avoid player conflict, and a mental state system that tracks aggression.

    Story

The story of Grand Theft Auto Online unfolds through missions given by a rotating cast of characters from the single-player campaign, including Lester Crest, Trevor Philips, and Lamar Davis. The player character is a mute newcomer to Los Santos, quickly drawn into the criminal underworld. Early missions involve small-time jobs for Gerald, Simeon, and Lamar, gradually escalating to high-stakes heists orchestrated by Lester.

Key story arcs include the Doomsday Heist, where players thwart a global conspiracy involving a secret organization called the IAA and a rogue AI. The Diamond Casino Heist involves robbing the eponymous casino, while the Cayo Perico Heist sends players to a private island to steal from drug lord El Rubio. These heists advance the narrative and unlock new gameplay opportunities. The overarching theme is the player's rise from street-level hustler to a powerful criminal empire owner, with the ability to become a CEO, motorcycle club president, or nightclub owner.
