Tôn Đức Thắng

Born August 20, 1888, in Long Xuyên, Tôn Đức Thắng became a significant figure in Vietnamese politics. He is widely known in Vietnam as Uncle Tôn, a testament to his revered status as a revolutionary and communist leader. His long life spanned much of Vietnam's tumultuous 20th century, and he passed away on March 30, 1980, at the age of 91. Tôn Đức Thắng's political career saw him hold several important positions. He served as the chairman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee from 1955 to 1960. Following this, he became the Vice President of Vietnam, serving under Hồ Chí Minh from 1960 until Ho's death in 1969. It was after Ho's passing that Tôn assumed the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1969. He continued as president, eventually leading a united Vietnam, until his death. While his role as president was largely ceremonial and he was not a key policymaker within the Politburo, his longevity and deep connection to the revolutionary movement made him a symbol of national unity and continuity.
