    Overview

Christopher Nolan turns his lens to ancient myth with The Odyssey, an epic retelling of Homer's foundational poem. The film follows Odysseus, the crafty king of Ithaca, as he fights his way home across a mythic Mediterranean after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as the hero, leading a sprawling cast that includes Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as his steadfast wife Penelope, and Zendaya as the goddess Athena.

Nolan has described the project as a mythic action epic shot with new IMAX film technology. Early trailers show massive seafaring set pieces, storm-tossed oceans, and encounters with legendary creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus and the sorceress Circe. The film promises to blend practical spectacle with the psychological depth Nolan is known for, exploring themes of identity, memory, and the cost of war.

Produced by Syncopy and Universal Pictures, The Odyssey reunites Nolan with his Oppenheimer collaborators: cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and composer Ludwig Göransson. With a reported budget of $250 million, it is set for release on July 17, 2026.

Odysseus, the clever king of Ithaca, has spent ten years fighting in the Trojan War. Now that the war is over, he and his crew set sail for home, hoping for a swift return to his wife Penelope and his young son Telemachus. But the journey proves far more dangerous than any battle. Odysseus has angered the sea god Poseidon, who unleashes storms and monsters to scatter his fleet and drive him off course.

The hero and his dwindling band of loyal companions face a series of legendary trials. They encounter the Cyclops Polyphemus, a one-eyed giant who traps them in his cave. They land on the island of the sorceress Circe, who turns men into beasts. They must navigate past the Sirens, whose song lures sailors to their deaths, and between the deadly whirlpool Charybdis and the six-headed monster Scylla. Odysseus relies on his cunning and wit to survive, but each victory comes at a cost, and the gods watch his every move.

Back in Ithaca, Penelope struggles to hold the kingdom together. A horde of suitors, led by the arrogant Antinous, has taken over the palace. They feast on Odysseus's provisions and pressure Penelope to choose a new husband. She devises a clever ruse: she will marry one of them once she finishes weaving a burial shroud for Odysseus's father. Each night she unravels her work, buying precious time. But the suitors grow impatient, and her son Telemachus is caught in the middle.

Telemachus, now a young man, embarks on his own journey to learn his father's fate. He travels to the courts of Menelaus and Nestor, war veterans who fought alongside Odysseus. Through their stories, Telemachus begins to understand the kind of man his father was and what it means to be a leader. He returns to Ithaca determined to stand up to the suitors, even if it means his death.

As Odysseus's voyage stretches into years, his men grow restless and mutinous. His second-in-command, Eurylochus, questions his decisions. The crew faces starvation, temptation, and despair. Odysseus must hold them together while wrestling with his own pride and longing for home. Meanwhile, the goddess Athena watches over him, intervening at key moments to guide his path. But not all the gods are on his side, and the price of divine favor is steep.

The film weaves these parallel narratives together, building toward a convergence in Ithaca. Odysseus's journey is not just a physical ordeal but a test of his identity. After years of war and wandering, who is he? And what kind of home will he find?
