Appa

Appa is a sky bison, a species native to the Air Nomads who lived in harmony with them for centuries. The monks of the Southern Air Temple gave Appa to Aang as a calf when the boy was young, forging a bond that would last a lifetime. Sky bison were revered by the Air Nomads, their arrow markings symbolizing the connection between bison and airbenders. Appa and Aang grew up together, traveling across the temples and sharing countless adventures. When Aang learned he was the Avatar and fled his responsibilities, Appa was by his side. They sought refuge in a storm, and a freak accident trapped them both inside an iceberg for a hundred years. Appa remained in suspended animation, preserved by the ice, until Katara and Sokka freed them in the Southern Water Tribe.[edit]

Appa is gentle, patient, and fiercely loyal. Despite his enormous size and strength, he rarely shows aggression unless his friends are threatened. He has a calm, almost meditative demeanor, often resting quietly while the Gaang makes camp. Appa is also protective, placing himself between danger and his companions without hesitation. He can be playful, especially with Momo, and shows a mischievous side when stealing food or splashing water. Appa communicates through a range of grunts, bellows, and body language, which Aang and the others learn to read. He is sensitive to the emotions of those around him, offering comfort when someone is upset. His loyalty is absolute; he once traveled across the Earth Kingdom alone, injured and frightened, just to find his way back to Aang.[edit]

Appa's journey mirrors Aang's own growth. In Season 1, he is simply a trusty mount, carrying the Gaang across the world. But in Season 2, his kidnapping by sandbenders in the episode "The Desert" becomes a turning point. Separated from Aang, Appa endures capture, mistreatment, and loneliness. He escapes and wanders the Earth Kingdom, briefly finding shelter with the Kyoshi Warriors and later at the Western Air Temple. His reunion with Aang in "The Guru" is one of the series' most emotional moments, triggering Aang's Avatar State. This trauma deepens Appa's character, showing his vulnerability and resilience. In Season 3, he is fully recovered and plays a vital role in the final battle, carrying Aang into the Fire Nation capital. After the war, Appa lives peacefully with Aang, helping to rebuild the Air Nation and fathering a line of sky bison, including Oogi, who appears in The Legend of Korra.[edit]
