X-Men: First Class

In 1962, the Cold War is boiling over, and the world teeters on the edge of nuclear annihilation. But the greatest threat may not come from superpowers or missiles, it comes from within. A secret organization of powerful mutants, led by the former Nazi scientist Sebastian Shaw, is manipulating global events to trigger World War III, believing mutants are destined to rule the ashes. Into this chaos step two young men who will shape the future of mutantkind: Charles Xavier, a brilliant telepath who believes in peaceful coexistence, and Erik Lehnsherr, a metal-manipulating survivor of the Holocaust driven by vengeance. Director Matthew Vaughn, working from a story by Bryan Singer, delivers a stylish period piece that channels 1960s espionage thrillers while grounding superhero spectacle in real-world history. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender deliver career-defining performances as the young Xavier and Magneto, their chemistry crackling as they recruit a ragtag team of misfit mutants, including a shapeshifting Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), a furry genius Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and a sonic-screaming Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones). The film balances intimate character drama with large-scale action, culminating in a reimagined Cuban Missile Crisis that tests every loyalty.

A young Erik Lehnsherr stands at the gates of Auschwitz in 1944, separated from his parents by Nazi officer Klaus Schmidt. When Schmidt forces Erik to move a coin using only his mind, the boy's latent magnetic powers erupt, but Schmidt, a mutant who can absorb energy, kills Erik's mother to provoke his rage. This trauma sets Erik on a decades-long hunt for the man he now knows as Sebastian Shaw.

Meanwhile, in Westchester, New York, Charles Xavier grows up in a comfortable mansion, using his telepathic gifts to befriend a young shapeshifter named Raven. Charles believes mutants can live peacefully alongside humans, and he dedicates his academic career to understanding mutation. By 1962, CIA agent Moira MacTaggert has uncovered Shaw's network of mutant operatives, including the telepathic, diamond-skinned Emma Frost, and seeks Charles's help. Together with Raven, now calling herself Mystique, Charles begins tracking other mutants.

Their search leads them to Erik, who has been using his metal powers to hunt former Nazis across the globe. Despite their opposing philosophies, Charles preaches tolerance, Erik demands retribution, the two form a powerful alliance. They recruit a team of young mutants: Hank McCoy, a brilliant scientist whose ape-like feet hide a transformative secret; Alex Summers, whose body generates explosive plasma; Sean Cassidy, whose sonic scream can shatter steel; Armando Muñoz, who can adapt to any threat; and Angel Salvadore, whose insect wings and acidic spit give her an edge.

The team trains at Charles's estate, learning to control their abilities while tracking Shaw's movements. Shaw, meanwhile, has infiltrated the highest levels of the U.S. military and the Soviet command, pushing both superpowers toward war. He plans to use the Cuban Missile Crisis as the trigger: once the missiles fly, he will eliminate humanity and establish mutant supremacy. Charles and Erik race to stop him, but their growing ideological rift threatens to tear the team apart before they can face Shaw's Hellfire Club.[edit]
