Vegeta

Vegeta was born on Planet Vegeta as the crown prince of the Saiyan race, son of King Vegeta. A prodigy even by Saiyan standards, he was already a mid-class warrior in his childhood. When Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, young Vegeta was off-world on a mission, spared only to be conscripted into Frieza's army. For years he served as a ruthless enforcer, secretly plotting to use the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality and overthrow Frieza. His search led him to Earth, where he arrived with Nappa in 762 Age to claim the planet's Dragon Balls.[edit]

Vegeta is defined by an overwhelming pride in his Saiyan heritage and his royal lineage. He is arrogant, hot-tempered, and dismissive of those he deems weaker, but beneath the bravado lies a deep-seated insecurity rooted in his subjugation under Frieza. His obsession with surpassing Goku drives much of his actions, yet he also possesses a fierce sense of honor and a capacity for self-sacrifice. Introduced as a villain, Vegeta's defeat by Goku on Earth plants the seed of his rivalry. On Namek, he allies with Goku against Frieza but is killed by the tyrant; he is later revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls. During the Android and Cell Sagas, he achieves Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, but his arrogance allows Cell to reach Perfect form. In the Majin Buu Saga, he allows Babidi to corrupt him for power, leading to a devastating rampage and a sacrificial explosion intended to kill Buu. After being resurrected, he reconciles with his son Trunks and aids in Buu's defeat. In Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta trains under Whis and Beerus, attaining Super Saiyan Blue. He later learns the Forced Spirit Fission technique on Yardrat and, during the Granolah the Survivor Arc, achieves Ultra Ego, a divine form that converts damage into power. Dragon Ball Daima (2024) sees him de-aged and exploring the Demon Realm.[edit]

Vegeta is consistently ranked among the most popular anime characters. He placed first in the 1993 Weekly Shōnen Jump character poll and third in the 2023 NHK Dragon Ball poll, behind Goku and Piccolo. His character arc, from genocidal villain to protective father, is widely praised as the best in Dragon Ball and has influenced countless anime rivals. The character's pride, catchphrases, and iconic moments have permeated popular culture, making him a staple in video games, memes, and merchandise.
