Stannis Baratheon

Born in 264 AC at Storm's End, Stannis was the second son of Steffon Baratheon and Cassana Estermont. His early life was marked by a sense of being overlooked, overshadowed by his elder brother Robert's charisma and martial prowess, and later by Renly's charm. During Robert's Rebellion, when he was just 17, Stannis held Storm's End under siege for nearly a year. The castle was blockaded by the Tyrell and Redwyne fleets, and food ran so low that he and his garrison survived on onions, salt fish, and rats smuggled in by the smuggler Davos Seaworth. This experience forged his grim, unyielding disposition. After the war, Robert granted him Dragonstone, the Targaryen ancestral fortress, rather than the much richer Storm's End, which went to Renly. Stannis took this as a slight, though he dutifully accepted. At the Battle of the Blackwater, he is on the verge of victory when Tywin Lannister and the Tyrells arrive, crushing his forces. He retreats to Dragonstone, then sails to the Wall in A Storm of Swords to answer the Night's Watch's plea for aid. He defeats Mance Rayder's wildling army at the Battle of Castle Black, earning the grudging respect of Jon Snow. In A Dance with Dragons, he marches south to liberate the North from the Boltons, but his campaign stalls in brutal winter snows. His fate remains unresolved in the books.
