Overview
Origin Story
Melisandre was born centuries before the events of the series, likely as a slave child in an unknown land. She was sold to the Red Temple, where she was trained in the mysteries of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. Her true name may have been Melony, but she abandoned it upon becoming a priestess. She eventually journeyed to the city of Asshai in the far east, where she studied shadowbinding and pyromancy under the shadowbinders of that land.
Her path led her to Westeros, arriving at Dragonstone during the reign of Stannis Baratheon. She became convinced that Stannis was Azor Ahai reborn, a prophesied hero meant to fight the darkness. She quickly rose to become his most trusted advisor, converting him to her faith and convincing him to press his claim for the Iron Throne as a divine mission.
Personality
Melisandre is utterly devoted to her faith, believing that the end justifies any means in the war against the Great Other. She is calculating and manipulative, using her beauty and charisma to influence those around her. She shows little remorse for the deaths she causes, viewing them as necessary sacrifices. Despite her confidence, she harbors deep doubts about her own visions, which she struggles to interpret correctly. She is patient and persuasive, but can be ruthless when her beliefs are challenged.
Story Arc
Melisandre first appears as a shadowy figure advising Stannis Baratheon, convincing him to convert to the faith of R'hllor. She births a shadow assassin that kills his rival Renly Baratheon, then another to kill Ser Cortnay Penrose. In A Storm of Swords, she remains at Dragonstone while Stannis marches north, burning followers of the Seven as sacrifices.
In A Dance with Dragons, she travels to the Wall to support Stannis's campaign. She becomes a point-of-view character, revealing her internal struggle to interpret visions in the flames. She attempts to seduce Jon Snow and later saves his life with a ritual kiss after he is stabbed.
In the television series, she convinces Stannis to burn his daughter Shireen alive, a decision that leads to his defeat. After Stannis's death, she meets Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, correctly identifying Jon as Azor Ahai. She resurrects Jon and helps rally the armies of the living against the Night King. After the Battle of Winterfell, she removes her ruby choker, revealing her ancient form, and walks into the snow to die.
