The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 and immediately set out to complete the nine-film "Skywalker Saga" that George Lucas had left unfinished. The resulting sequel trilogy spans three films released between 2015 and 2019, picking up the narrative thread decades after Return of the Jedi. This era explores a galaxy struggling to define itself after the fall of the Empire and the rise of a new military junta known as the First Order.
While the original films focused on Luke Skywalker's journey from farm boy to hero, this trilogy shifts focus to a new generation led by Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. These characters navigate a complex political landscape while confronting the legacy of their predecessors. The story weaves together themes of redemption, the cyclical nature of conflict, and the question of whether bloodlines truly determine one's destiny.

Decades after the destruction of the second Death Star, the New Republic has established peace across most of the galaxy but struggles to contain the remnants of the fallen Empire. In the Outer Rim, a secret military faction called the First Order emerges under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke. They seek to restore imperial rule through fear and force. Opposing them is the Resistance, a small paramilitary group funded by sympathetic senators but lacking official backing from the New Republic Senate. General Leia Organa leads this desperate fight against an enemy that grows stronger with every passing day.
The narrative begins when the Resistance discovers a map leading to the missing Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. A scavenger named Rey finds herself caught in the middle of a chase for this map, pursued by Kylo Ren, a powerful warrior who wields a red lightsaber and serves the First Order. Kylo is actually Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, who fell to the dark side of the Force. As Rey, Finn, and Poe join forces, they uncover their own unique abilities and connections to the Force. The first film ends with the destruction of the First Order's superweapon, Starkiller Base, and the tragic death of Han Solo at the hands of his own son.
The second film takes place immediately after these events. The Resistance flees to a remote base while Kylo Ren consolidates power within the First Order. Rey travels to the planet Ahch-To to find Luke Skywalker, hoping he will teach her how to use the Force. Luke, however, lives in self-imposed exile, believing that the Jedi order must end because it failed to stop the rise of the Sith. He initially refuses to train Rey but eventually offers her guidance before leaving her alone on the island. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren destroys the Resistance base and assumes leadership of the First Order. The film concludes with Rey departing Ahch-To to continue her training elsewhere, having learned that failure is part of the path to mastery.
The final installment reveals that Emperor Palpatine, thought dead, has returned through a clone body hidden on the Sith moon of Exegol. He plans to unleash a massive fleet of starships known as the Final Order to crush all opposition. Rey confronts her heritage as a Palpatine and learns she must choose between her bloodline and the family she chose. She trains with the spirits of past Jedi and returns to face Palpatine alongside allies from across the galaxy. The climax features a massive space battle over Exegol where the Resistance fights the Sith Eternal forces. Rey defeats Palpatine using the lightsabers of Luke and Leia, channeling the strength of all Jedi before him. Kylo Ren returns to the light side one last time to save Rey, sacrificing his life in the process. Rey survives and adopts the name Rey Skywalker, burying the lightsabers of her mentors on Tatooine to honor their legacy.

The sequel trilogy revitalized the franchise with high-octane action and emotional resonance in its opening act. However, subsequent entries faced criticism for tonal inconsistencies and divisive narrative choices regarding legacy characters, resulting in a polarized reception among fans and critics alike.
