Han Solo

Han Solo was born on the industrial planet Corellia. Orphaned at a young age, he survived as a street thief before joining the Imperial Navy as a pilot, hoping to earn enough to buy his own ship. He deserted after rescuing the Wookiee Chewbacca from slavery, incurring a life-debt from the Wookiee. Together, they became smugglers for the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn, operating from the modified YT-1300 freighter that Solo won from Lando Calrissian in a game of sabacc. His early exploits included the legendary Kessel Run, which he completed in under twelve parsecs by taking a dangerous shortcut through the Maw.[edit]

In the original trilogy, Han Solo begins as a debt-ridden smuggler who only helps the Rebellion for payment. After being paid to transport Obi-Wan and Luke to Alderaan, he initially leaves the fight, but returns at the critical moment to destroy Darth Vader's TIE fighter during the Battle of Yavin. In The Empire Strikes Back, his growing love for Leia leads him to stay with the Rebels, but he is betrayed by Lando, frozen in carbonite, and delivered to Jabba the Hutt. Rescued by Leia and Chewbacca, he leads the ground assault on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi and reconciles with Leia.

Thirty years later, in The Force Awakens, Solo has returned to smuggling after his son Ben's fall to the dark side. He mentors Rey and Finn, and confronts his son, now Kylo Ren, on Starkiller Base. In a desperate attempt to redeem him, Solo reaches out to his son, but Kylo plunges a lightsaber through his chest. His death shakes the galaxy and spurs Rey to embrace her destiny. The prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story shows his early adventures, his romance with Qi'ra, and his first meeting with Chewbacca, ending with him setting off to Tatooine on a job that leads into A New Hope.[edit]

Empire magazine placed him fourth on its list of the greatest film characters. Entertainment Weekly called him the seventh coolest hero in pop culture. His line 'I know' (in response to Leia's 'I love you') is one of the most quoted movie lines. The character's roguish charm, moral complexity, and redemption arc have influenced countless anti-heroes in subsequent media.
