Born Leia Amidala Skywalker in 19 BBY, Leia is the daughter of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala. Her mother died shortly after childbirth, and her father fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. To protect the twins from the Emperor, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda separated them. Leia was adopted by Viceroy Bail Organa and Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan, raised as Princess Leia Organa on the peaceful planet of Alderaan. She grew up immersed in politics and diplomacy, becoming a senator in the Imperial Senate by her late teens. Leia's journey spans the entire Skywalker saga. In A New Hope, she is a rebel agent who steals the Death Star plans, endures torture, and watches Alderaan be destroyed, yet she never breaks. Rescued by Luke and Han, she joins the attack on the Death Star. In The Empire Strikes Back, she commands the Rebel base on Hoth, escapes the Empire, and falls in love with Han Solo. When Han is captured, she leads the rescue mission. Return of the Jedi reveals her lineage: she is Luke's twin sister and Darth Vader's daughter. She kills Jabba the Hutt, befriends the Ewoks, and helps destroy the second Death Star. After the war, she becomes a New Republic senator and marries Han, but their son Ben turns to the dark side as Kylo Ren. In the sequel trilogy, Leia is General of the Resistance, facing the First Order. She survives an assassination attempt in space, using the Force. Carrie Fisher's performance earned Saturn Award nominations for both the original and sequel trilogies.
