Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Mother Teresa became a Catholic nun and missionary, dedicating her life to those in extreme poverty. She was raised in a devout Catholic household. At 18, she left her native land to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. Her path soon led her to India, the country that would become her home for the rest of her life and the center of her remarkable work. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, an order initially focused on caring for the destitute in the slums of Calcutta. This organization grew significantly over the years, expanding its reach to over 133 countries by 2012. With more than 4,500 nuns, the Missionaries of Charity established facilities such as homes for the terminally ill, soup kitchens, clinics, orphanages, and schools. Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, at St. John's Hospital in Kolkata within the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity.

Her final public appearance occurred shortly before this hospitalization when she attended a facility opening in the Philippines in late August 1997. The official cause was reported as heart failure complicated by multiple organ failures and pneumonia, stemming from a heart attack in January 1997 and a second one in August. Her funeral took place the following day, September 6, 1997, at the Mother House presided over by Archbishop Henry Sebastian D'Souza.
