Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark in a story that strips the billionaire inventor of his armor and forces him to confront the psychological scars left by the Battle of New York. The narrative begins in the immediate aftermath of The Avengers, where Tony Stark is unable to sleep due to PTSD triggered by the Chitauri invasion. He spends his days building new suits but remains trapped in a cycle of fear and paranoia. Meanwhile, a figure calling himself the Mandarin appears on television screens, threatening the American government and claiming credit for explosions at various locations. The situation escalates when a bomb detonates at Stark's Malibu home, killing his assistant Happy Hogan and leaving Tony washed up on a remote beach in Tennessee.

Stripped of his technology, Tony meets Harley Keener, a resourceful young boy who helps him repair his damaged Mark 42 armor prototype. Together they investigate the bombings, leading Tony to discover that the "Mandarin" is not a single person but a media creation. The real mastermind is Aldrich Killian, a disgraced scientist whose Extremis project aims to create super-soldiers capable of regeneration and heat generation. Killian has been using the unstable serum to fuel the bombings, masking his true intentions while targeting those who wronged him.

Tony tracks down Killian and Dr. Maya Hansen, learning that the Extremis virus causes many subjects to explode violently, a side effect the public mistakes for the Mandarin's power. Colonel James Rhodes, now operating as War Machine, is also targeted by Killian, who injects him with a modified version of the serum. As Tony fights to rescue Pepper Potts, who has been kidnapped to serve as a test subject for the final iteration of the virus, he realizes that his identity as Iron Man is tied too closely to his technology. The film builds toward a confrontation where Tony must overcome his own demons and the physical limitations of his situation to stop Killian from unleashing chaos upon the world.[edit]
