Haymitch Abernathy was born in District 12, the coal-mining district of Panem. At age 16, he was selected as the male tribute for the 50th Hunger Games, the second Quarter Quell, which featured twice the number of tributes. He won by using the arena's force field to deflect an axe thrown by a fellow tribute, killing the opponent. This unconventional and brutal tactic was seen as an act of defiance by the Capitol. In retaliation, the Capitol killed his mother, younger brother, and girlfriend shortly after his victory.
