Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen was born on May 8 in District 12, the poorest district in the nation of Panem. Her father, a coal miner, taught her to hunt with a bow and arrow before he died in a mining explosion when she was eleven. After his death, Katniss's mother fell into a deep depression, leaving Katniss to provide for her mother and younger sister, Primrose. She began illegally hunting in the woods outside the district's fence, trading game for goods at the Hob, the local black market. There she met Gale Hawthorne, who became her hunting partner and closest friend. To feed her family, Katniss also foraged for edible plants and learned medicinal uses for herbs from her mother. Their final act of defiance, threatening to eat poisonous berries rather than kill each other, forces the Capitol to declare both victors, but it also sparks rebellion across the districts. In Catching Fire, Katniss is forced into the 75th Hunger Games, a Quarter Quell that pits past victors against each other. She becomes the Mockingjay, a symbol of resistance, and is rescued by rebels from District 13. In Mockingjay, she reluctantly becomes the face of the rebellion, but she grows disillusioned with both sides. After President Coin orders a final, cruel attack on Capitol children, Katniss assassinates Coin instead of President Snow.
