Severus Snape was born on January 9, 1960, to Tobias Snape, a Muggle, and Eileen Prince, a witch. The family lived in Spinner's End, a grim industrial area, where his parents' volatile marriage left him isolated and neglected. He first met Lily Evans when they were children, playing near his home. The friendship became the defining relationship of his life. At Hogwarts, Snape was sorted into Slytherin, where his aptitude for the Dark Arts and his friendship with future Death Eaters like Lucius Malfoy set him apart. He was relentlessly bullied by James Potter and Sirius Black, most notably during the event later seen in the Pensieve as 'Snape's Worst Memory', a humiliating public attack that drove a wedge between him and Lily.
