The Legend of Zelda
"It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."
Overview
The Legend of Zelda, released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System, is the first game in Nintendo's legendary action-adventure series. It introduced players to the land of Hyrule, a young hero named Link, and the quest to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. The game's non-linear structure, top-down perspective, and focus on exploration and puzzle-solving set a new standard for video games.
Players navigate an overworld divided into screens, entering caves, forests, and dungeons. They collect weapons and items like the boomerang, bombs, and bow and arrows to defeat monsters and overcome obstacles. The game features nine dungeons, each containing a piece of the Triforce of Wisdom, culminating in a final showdown with Ganon. A second quest becomes available after completion, remixing dungeon layouts and increasing difficulty.
The game was a commercial and critical success, selling over 6.5 million copies worldwide. It has been re-released on numerous platforms, including the Nintendo Switch Online service and the Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda handheld. The Legend of Zelda is consistently ranked among the greatest and most influential video games ever made.
Gameplay
The Legend of Zelda is played from a top-down perspective. The overworld is a grid of screens, each filled with enemies, secrets, and entrances to caves and dungeons. Link can move in four directions, attack with his sword, and use items found throughout the adventure. The game's non-linear design allows players to tackle most dungeons in any order after the first few.
Items are key to progression. The boomerang stuns enemies, bombs open hidden walls, and the raft allows crossing water. The bow and silver arrow are essential to defeat Ganon. Hearts dropped by enemies restore health, and collecting four heart containers increases Link's maximum life. Rupees serve as currency for buying items and information from merchants.
The game introduced the save feature via battery-backed memory in the Famicom Disk System, a significant innovation. Players can save their progress at any time and resume later. The second quest, activated by entering the name ZELDA, offers a harder challenge with rearranged dungeons and tougher enemies.
Story
The game begins with a brief prologue: the evil Ganon has stolen the Triforce of Power and imprisoned Princess Zelda. Zelda, fearing Ganon's tyranny, breaks the Triforce of Wisdom into eight fragments and hides them in dungeons across Hyrule. An old woman, later revealed to be Impa, Zelda's nurse, sends word to a young boy named Link.
Link sets out to collect the eight fragments. He explores the land, battling monsters and solving puzzles. After assembling the full Triforce of Wisdom, Link enters Death Mountain, Ganon's lair. Using the silver arrow, he defeats Ganon and rescues Zelda. Together, they use the combined Triforce to restore peace to Hyrule.
