Halo Infinite
"The Master Chief returns to the battlefield in an open-zone adventure."
Overview
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 awakens on Zeta Halo, a massive Forerunner ringworld, after being separated from his team during the events of Halo 5: Guardians. Stranded and suffering from fragmented memories, he must survive against the Banished, a ruthless mercenary faction led by the warlord Atriox. The narrative focuses heavily on Chief's psychological state as he pieces together the origins of the threat while uncovering the secrets of the ring. Unlike previous entries where the campaign and multiplayer were distinct products, this title decoupled these experiences; the multiplayer component launched as a free-to-play title in November 2020, well before the main campaign.
The game introduces a more open-ended approach to level design compared to the linear corridors of earlier titles. Campaign missions feature open zones that encourage exploration and player choice in how objectives are approached. Central to this new traversal system is a physics-based grappling hook that allows players to swing across chasms, pull enemies or objects toward them, and chain movements for high-speed mobility. Combat emphasizes gunplay variety with new weapons like the Pulse Carbine and the Energy Sword alongside classic armaments such as the Battle Rifle and Magnum.
Gameplay
The Slipspace Engine powers the visual fidelity of the experience, delivering dynamic lighting, volumetric fog, and detailed environmental textures optimized for next-generation consoles. Players utilize the grappling hook to navigate the vast open zones, creating unique paths through combat scenarios rather than following set routes. The combat loop relies on a mix of kinetic energy weapons and traditional firearms, encouraging players to adapt their loadouts based on the specific challenges presented by the Banished forces.
Story
Chief fights to reclaim the ring from Atriox while recovering lost memories of his past. The plot unfolds through a series of encounters that reveal the Banished' history and their intent to use the ring's technology to dominate the galaxy. As the story progresses, the Chief discovers that the ring holds a deeper mystery tied to the Forerunners and the ancient threat they once faced. The narrative concludes with Chief defeating the Banished leadership but leaving the fate of the ring uncertain.
