Halo: Combat Evolved
"The launch title that defined the Xbox and revolutionized console shooters."
Score
9.2/10
Overview
Bungie Studios released Halo: Combat Evolved on November 15, 2001, as the flagship title for the original Xbox. The game introduced dual analog stick controls to the console market, allowing players to move and aim simultaneously without switching modes. This mechanical shift separated it from predecessors like Quake III Arena, which relied on keyboard-and-mouse or single-stick setups. Microsoft purchased Bungie shortly before launch to secure the exclusive, ensuring the platform had a strong commercial foundation.
The narrative follows Master Chief, a super-soldier awakened from cryosleep on the ringworld Installation 04. He teams up with the AI Cortana to investigate a Covenant invasion while uncovering the rings' true purpose as weapons capable of eradicating all sentient life. The story balances tight gunplay with strategic pacing, introducing vehicle sections where players drive Warthogs and Scorpions independently of their character.
Gameplay
Players manage energy shields that recharge over time rather than using traditional health kits. The combat loop alternates between infantry firefights and driving armored vehicles across open terrain. Enemy AI systems allowed opponents to flank positions, throw grenades, and utilize cover dynamically. The game supported split-screen play for up to four local players and launched alongside Xbox Live, enabling online matchmaking for the first time on consoles.
Story
In 2552, the United Nations Space Command faces an alien alliance known as the Covenant. Master Chief wakes up on Halo Installation 04 after the station's destruction forces humanity into a desperate defense. The Chief and Cortana discover the rings are designed to destroy all biological life to stop the Flood, a parasitic species threatening the galaxy. The mission culminates in the destruction of the ringworld to prevent the Covenant from activating its weapon array, ending the immediate threat but leaving the wider war unresolved.
