When 20th Century Fox finally let Ryan Reynolds put on the red suit, nobody predicted the R-rated superhero movie would become a $782 million global juggernaut. After a decade of development hell and a leaked test reel that sent fans into a frenzy, Tim Miller's directorial debut arrived in February 2016 and instantly rewrote the rules for what a comic book movie could be. This is not your typical origin story. From the opening credits that cheekily list "God's Perfect Idiot" for Reynolds and "A British Villain" for Ed Skrein, you know you are in for something different.

The film follows Wade Wilson, a smart-mouthed mercenary who after a cancer diagnosis volunteers for a shady experimental treatment. The procedure gives him a regenerative healing factor but leaves his skin badly scarred. What follows is a revenge mission wrapped in a love story, delivered with a relentless barrage of fourth-wall breaks, pop culture references, and graphic violence that earned the R rating proudly. Shot in and around Vancouver on a relatively modest $58 million budget, the production leaned heavily on practical stunts and Reynolds's comedic timing rather than expensive CGI. The result felt scrappy and personal, a quality that resonated with audiences tired of formulaic blockbusters.

Beyond the box office numbers, Deadpool became a cultural flashpoint. It proved that adult-oriented superhero fare could dominate the mainstream, paving the way for Logan and Joker. The film's success also forced Fox to fast-track a sequel, and eventually set the stage for Deadpool's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But at its heart, this is a movie about a guy who just wants to look good enough for the woman he loves, and he will kill a lot of people to get there. Wade Wilson works as a mercenary in New York City, taking on odd jobs with his best friend Weasel, who runs a dive bar for criminals. His life is chaotic but he enjoys it, until he meets Vanessa Carlysle at a bar. Their connection is immediate and intense. Both are damaged, both are funny, and both fall hard. They spend a year building a life together, complete with anniversaries celebrated with elaborate sex montages and genuine tenderness. Wade proposes, and for a moment it looks like he might escape his violent past.

Then Wade collapses. The diagnosis is terminal cancer. It has spread through his lungs, liver, and brain. Doctors give him months. Desperate, Wade is approached by a recruiter for a mysterious organization that promises a cure. The recruiter, a man named Smith, claims they can activate latent mutant genes and heal him completely. Wade leaves Vanessa without explanation, unable to face her as he deteriorates. He enters the program run by Ajax, a sadistic scientist who subjects him to torture-like treatments designed to trigger a healing factor. The process is agonizing, and Wade endures days of being drowned, burned, and frozen. Finally, his body responds. But the healing factor comes at a cost. His skin is left scarred and pitted, and Ajax reveals he never intended to cure Wade. He just wanted a test subject. Wade escapes the facility, but he is now disfigured and believes Vanessa will never accept him.

Fueled by rage and heartbreak, Wade adopts the name Deadpool and spends the next year tracking Ajax. He builds a costume, stockpiles weapons, and develops a wisecracking persona that hides his pain. He also discovers his healing factor makes him virtually unkillable, so he takes increasingly reckless risks. Along the way, he kidnaps a teenage taxi driver named Dopinder and uses him as his chauffeur, much to Dopinder's confusion. Deadpool's trail of destruction eventually draws the attention of the X-Men, specifically the metal-skinned Colossus and his trainee Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Colossus wants Deadpool to join the X-Men and stop killing people. Deadpool wants Colossus to leave him alone so he can murder Ajax.

Meanwhile, Ajax learns that Deadpool is still alive and sends his enforcer Angel Dust to eliminate him. Deadpool survives their fight but realizes Ajax has tracked down Vanessa and is holding her hostage. This forces Deadpool to abandon his solo mission and accept help from Colossus and Negasonic. The three head to Ajax's base, a decommissioned helicarrier in a scrapyard, for a final confrontation. Deadpool's plan is simple: kill Ajax, save Vanessa, and maybe figure out a way to fix his face. But nothing ever goes that smoothly.[edit]
