Norrin Radd was born on Zenn-La, a utopian planet in the Deneb system where science and philosophy had eliminated war, poverty, and disease. As a young astronomer, he watched in horror as the cosmic entity Galactus arrived to consume his world. Desperate to save his people and his beloved Shalla-Bal, Norrin approached the world-devourer and offered himself as a herald. Galactus accepted, transforming Norrin into the Silver Surfer by infusing him with a fraction of the Power Cosmic. The Surfer's skin turned silver, his body became near-indestructible, and he gained a surfboard-like craft that could traverse the cosmos at faster-than-light speeds.
