Galactus

Before the Big Bang, Galactus was Galan, an explorer from the planet Taa in the previous universe. As that universe collapsed into its final death, Galan piloted his ship into the cosmic cradle, merging with the Sentience of the Universe. This fusion birthed Galactus, a being born from the end of all things. He emerged into the new Marvel Universe as a cosmic force, his body sustained by consuming planets rich in life energy. His first herald was the Silver Surfer, whom he created from the humanoid Norrin Radd to scout worlds. Over eons, Galactus has cycled through many heralds, each serving his insatiable hunger.[edit]

Galactus is not evil in the human sense. He operates on a cosmic scale, viewing mortal lives as fleeting and insignificant. His primary drive is survival, and he feels no malice when destroying a world any more than a human feels malice eating a sandwich. Yet beneath the cold exterior, there is a tragic awareness of his own nature. He has shown moments of honor, gratitude, and even compassion, such as sparing Earth after the Silver Surfer's plea and later aiding heroes against greater threats. He is solitary, ancient, and weary, burdened by a hunger that can never be fully sated.[edit]

Galactus's first major appearance in Fantastic Four #48-50 set the template: he came to Earth to consume it, but the Silver Surfer's betrayal forced him to retreat. Over decades, Galactus evolved from a pure villain to a complex anti-hero. In the 2006 Annihilation event, he was weakened and nearly killed by Annihilus, leading to his temporary death and rebirth. The 2015 Ultimates series transformed him into the Lifebringer, a being who creates rather than destroys, after being infused with the energy of the Multiverse. This change was short-lived; he eventually reverted due to cosmic imbalance. Galactus has become a cornerstone of Marvel's cosmic mythology. Fans and critics alike praise his design and the moral complexity he brings. IGN ranked him fifth on their Top 100 Comic Book Villains list, noting his 'larger-than-life presence' and how he redefines evil as necessity rather than malice. His name has entered common parlance as a metaphor for insatiable consumption. While some fans find his power level too abstract, most appreciate the cosmic horror and philosophical questions he raises.
