Palpatine

Sheev Palpatine was born on the planet Naboo to a wealthy and influential family. From a young age, he was drawn to the dark side of the Force, secretly training under a Sith master. He entered politics as a Senator from Naboo, using his charismatic persona to hide his Sith identity, Darth Sidious. Palpatine manipulated the Trade Federation to blockade his own planet, creating a crisis that led to the election of Supreme Chancellor Valorum's ouster. He then engineered his own election as Chancellor, promising security and stability. Over the next decade, he secretly orchestrated the Separatist movement and the Clone Wars, using both sides to weaken the Jedi and consolidate power. His ultimate goal was to destroy the Jedi Order and transform the Republic into a Sith-ruled Empire.[edit]

Palpatine is a master manipulator, patient and calculating, with an insatiable lust for power. He presents a grandfatherly, humble facade to the public while reveling in cruelty and domination in private. He is supremely confident in his schemes, often taunting his enemies with the truth of his manipulations. He views others as tools to be used and discarded, showing no genuine loyalty even to his apprentices. Palpatine's story spans the entire Skywalker Saga. In the prequel trilogy, he rises from Senator to Emperor, orchestrating the fall of the Jedi and Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader. In the original trilogy, he rules as a tyrant, tempting Luke Skywalker to the dark side before being thrown into the Death Star's reactor by Vader. In the sequel trilogy, it is revealed that Palpatine survived by transferring his essence into a cloned body on the hidden Sith world of Exegol. He created Snoke as a puppet to lead the First Order and corrupt Ben Solo into Kylo Ren. He seeks to possess his granddaughter Rey, but she ultimately destroys him with the help of Ben Solo's redeemed spirit, ending his reign for good.[edit]

Palpatine is widely regarded as one of the greatest villains in film history. His portrayal by Ian McDiarmid has been praised for its chilling charisma and subtle menace. The character has become a cultural symbol of evil, political manipulation, and the dangers of authoritarianism. His rise mirrors real-world dictators, and lines like 'I am the Senate' have become iconic memes. Fans appreciate his cunning and patience, though some criticized his resurrection in The Rise of Skywalker as contrived.
