Gollum

Gollum began life as Sméagol, a Stoor Hobbit born around TA 2430 near the Gladden Fields. On his birthday circa TA 2463, his cousin Déagol pulled the One Ring from the River Anduin while fishing. Sméagol, instantly overcome with desire for the golden band, demanded it as a birthday present. When Déagol refused, Sméagol strangled him and took the Ring. The murder and the Ring's malevolent influence twisted him over centuries. He retreated into the Misty Mountains, where the Ring preserved his life but warped his body into a gaunt, pale creature with large eyes and webbed feet. He called the Ring "my precious" and developed a split personality: the treacherous Gollum and the remnant of Sméagol, who still recalled friendship and sunlight.[edit]

Gollum is defined by his all-consuming obsession with the Ring, which he calls "my precious." This addiction has fragmented his psyche into two warring selves: Gollum, the sneaky, murderous creature who will do anything to reclaim the Ring, and Sméagol, the pathetic, childlike remnant who craves kindness and freedom. He is paranoid, prone to muttering to himself, and capable of both pathetic whining and sudden violence. His loyalty is tenuous at best, shifting instantly when the Ring is near. Despite his treachery, he possesses a desperate need for connection and approval, which Frodo briefly exploits. In The Hobbit, Gollum encounters Bilbo Baggins in his cave and engages in a riddle contest for his life. Bilbo wins with the help of the Ring's invisibility and escapes, leaving Gollum to believe the Ring was stolen. In The Lord of the Rings, Gollum leaves the mountains to track the Ring. Captured and tortured by Mordor, he escapes and follows the Fellowship. He meets Frodo and Sam in the Dead Marshes, where Frodo's pity and kindness awaken Sméagol's better self. Gollum swears an oath to serve the "Master of the Precious" and guides them toward Mordor. However, Sam's distrust pushes him back toward evil. He betrays Frodo to Shelob and leads him into the lair, believing the Ring will be his. Yet he follows them into Mount Doom. At the Cracks of Doom, as Frodo claims the Ring, Gollum attacks, bites off Frodo's finger, and in his ecstasy falls into the lava, destroying the Ring and himself. His death fulfills Gandalf's prophecy that Gollum still had a role to play and that mercy may be rewarded.[edit]

Gollum is widely regarded as one of the greatest villains and most complex characters in fantasy literature. His tragic arc, from Hobbit to monster to accidental hero, has been analyzed by scholars as a symbol of addiction, corruption, and the psychological shadow of the hero. The phrase "my precious" has become a cultural catchphrase. Andy Serkis's performance in the film trilogy revolutionized motion capture acting, earning a Critics' Choice Award and a Saturn Award nomination. The 'Riddles in the Dark' scene from The Hobbit remains one of the most famous in fantasy. Gollum's split personality, especially the argument scene in The Two Towers, is celebrated as a masterclass in character duality.
