Steel Ball Run

Steel Ball Run is the seventh story arc of Hirohiko Araki's long-running manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but it marks a bold new beginning. Set in the American frontier of 1890, the story follows Johnny Joestar, a once-celebrated jockey now confined to a wheelchair after a personal tragedy, and Gyro Zeppeli, a disgraced Neapolitan executioner. Both enter the Steel Ball Run, a transcontinental horse race from San Diego to New York City with a $50 million grand prize. Johnny hopes to regain the use of his legs, while Gyro seeks amnesty for a child on death row. As they race across the continent, they discover that the race's organizer, the wealthy and charismatic Funny Valentine, has a hidden agenda involving a mystical corpse. Soon, they are targeted by Stand users, individuals with supernatural abilities, and must fight for survival while uncovering the true purpose of the race.

The first 23 chapters were serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2004 under the title Steel Ball Run, initially presented as a standalone story with no connection to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. However, when the series moved to the seinen magazine Ultra Jump in 2005, Araki officially revealed it as the seventh part of the franchise, albeit set in a new continuity separate from the first six parts. This reboot allowed Araki to explore more mature themes and a more complex narrative structure. The 95 chapters were collected into 24 tankōbon volumes (volumes 81–104 of the overall series), with the first volume released in Japan on April 4, 2005, and the final on April 19, 2011. Viz Media licensed the manga for English release in North America, with the first volume published in May 2025.

Steel Ball Run is widely regarded as one of the greatest manga arcs ever written. Critics praise its mature storytelling, complex characters, and Araki's evolved art style, which blends realism with dynamic energy. The shift to Ultra Jump allowed for longer chapters and more sophisticated themes, such as redemption, sacrifice, and the nature of justice. On platforms like MyAnimeList and AniList, it consistently ranks among the top manga series. An anime adaptation, titled Steel Ball Run: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, premiered on Netflix in March 2026 and was well-received for its faithful adaptation and high-quality animation. [edit]
