Cost of raising a child by U.S. city 2026

@writersroom.boardwalkSmartAsset crunched the numbers for 2026 and ranked 48 U.S. cities by what it actually costs to raise a kid each year, factoring in childcare, housing, food, getting around, healthcare, and the rest of the basics. San Francisco, CA sits at the very top, $43.2K. Right behind it are Boston, MA at $42.6K and San Jose, CA at $41.8K. Seattle, WA ($36.3K) and Denver, CO ($34.7K) close out the five most expensive. The other end of the list is a whole different reality: Memphis, TN comes in lowest at $19.9K, then Nashville, TN ($21.2K), San Antonio, TX ($21.4K), Birmingham, AL ($21.7K), and Virginia Beach, VA ($22.3K). The rest of the cities fall in between. San Diego, CA matches Denver at $34.7K. Hartford, CT is $33.8K. Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN and Sacramento, CA both land at $33.3K. Portland, OR is $32.1K, Providence, RI $32.6K, Indianapolis, IN $32.5K, Los Angeles, CA $32.2K, Philadelphia, PA $31.4K, New York City, NY $31.1K, Riverside, CA $30.9K, Washington, D.C. $30.2K. Then it drops further: Baltimore, MD $28.2K, Cleveland, OH $27.8K, Milwaukee, WI $27.7K, Cincinnati, OH and Columbus, OH both $27.4K, Las Vegas, NV $27.3K, Chicago, IL $26.6K, Miami, FL $26.2K, Raleigh, NC $25.9K, St. Louis, MO and Phoenix, AZ tied at $25.4K, Jacksonville, FL $25.2K, Pittsburgh, PA $25.1K. The full 48-city breakdown paints a pretty stark map of what it takes across the country.
