Hamilton's achievements are extraordinary in both breadth and depth. He is one of the few mathematicians to have a fundamental formulation of classical mechanics named after him, Hamiltonian mechanics, which later became central to quantum mechanics. His discovery of quaternions opened up a new branch of abstract algebra and forced mathematicians to abandon the commutative law of multiplication. He was knighted at age thirty, a rare honor for a scientist at that time, and received the Royal Society's Royal Medal. His work on conical refraction was a landmark in optics. The annual Hamilton Walk in Dublin, retracing his quaternion discovery, continues to draw participants, a testament to his enduring cultural and scientific legacy.
