Wang Huning's record is measured in influence rather than trophies. He is one of seven people on the Politburo Standing Committee, the fourth-ranking leader of the Chinese Communist Party, and the man who has written the ideological language of three successive general secretaries. No other official in modern China has drafted the defining slogans of that many administrations. His 18-year run as director of the Central Policy Research Office is the longest in the office's history, and his 2023 elevation to the CPPCC chairmanship made him the country's top political advisor. For a scholar who never governed a province or ran a ministry, that is a singular path to the top of the world's second-largest economy.
