Viserys Targaryen

Viserys Targaryen was born in 276 AC on Dragonstone, the second son of King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella. His older brother was Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. During Robert's Rebellion, Aerys and Rhaegar were killed, and the Targaryen dynasty fell. Viserys and his infant sister Daenerys were smuggled to Essos by loyalists Ser Willem Darry and Ser Arthur Dayne. After Darry's death, the children were left homeless, wandering the Free Cities. Viserys grew up in poverty, constantly begging for support from powerful lords and merchants, earning the nickname the Beggar King. He became obsessed with reclaiming the Iron Throne, nurturing a deep sense of entitlement and a violent temper.[edit]

Viserys is vain, cruel, and paranoid. He believes his Targaryen blood makes him superior, yet he lacks the charisma or wisdom to inspire loyalty. His entitlement is matched only by his explosive temper, which he often takes out on Daenerys. He is obsessed with being called a king and fears being forgotten. Viserys's arc in A Game of Thrones is a tragic descent from claimant to victim. He arranges Daenerys's marriage to Khal Drogo in exchange for a Dothraki army, believing he can control the khal. However, his arrogance and ignorance of Dothraki culture alienate everyone. When Drogo refuses to march immediately, Viserys grows impatient and abusive. His breaking point comes in Vaes Dothrak, where he threatens Daenerys with a sword and demands his crown. Khal Drogo responds by pouring molten gold over his head, killing him.
