The award record here is unusual in that almost every major honour was shared. Cerf and Robert Kahn were named jointly for the National Medal of Technology in 1997 and the Turing Award in 2004, and the pattern has held for the Japan Prize and the Queen Elizabeth Prize. The 2005 Presidential Medal of Freedom was his alone, and it placed a working computer scientist in the same ceremony as astronauts and statesmen. Add the Marconi Prize, induction into two halls of fame, membership in the National Academy of Engineering and a long list of honorary doctorates, and the picture is of a career that was recognised early and then recognised again at each stage of the network's growth.
