Tsai Ming-liang is one of only a handful of directors to have won top prizes at all three major European festivals: the Golden Lion at Venice, the Grand Jury Prize at Berlin (twice), and the Grand Prize of the Jury at Berlin. His body of work has been honored with lifetime achievement awards from Rotterdam and Locarno. In 2023, TIME named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world, the first Taiwanese filmmaker to receive that recognition. His films regularly appear on Sight & Sound's Greatest Films of All Time lists, and his influence on slow cinema is widely acknowledged as foundational.
