Thomas Häßler's career is marked by two of the highest honors in international football: winning the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. He is one of only a handful of German players to have achieved both. His individual recognition includes being named German Footballer of the Year in 1989 and being selected for the UEFA European Championship Team of the Tournament twice. In 2004, Pelé named him to the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living footballers. In 2018, he was inducted into the German Football Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class.
