    The Twilight Saga

    Overview

The Twilight Saga is a series of five romantic vampire fantasy films released between 2008 and 2012, adapting Stephenie Meyer's four-book series with the final novel split into two parts. The franchise follows Isabella Swan, a teenage girl who relocates from sunny Arizona to the rainy town of Forks, Washington, and becomes entangled in a supernatural love triangle with vampire Edward Cullen and werewolf Jacob Black. The films were directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon, with Melissa Rosenberg writing all screenplays.

Collectively, the five films grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide against combined budgets of roughly $265 million, making it one of the highest-grossing film franchises of its era. The cast, led by Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, achieved international fame. The series was shot primarily in Oregon and Washington, with additional filming in Italy, Brazil, and Canada.

Critical reception ranged from mixed to negative, with the films averaging around 39% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51 on Metacritic. However, the franchise built an intensely devoted fan base, won numerous MTV Movie and Teen Choice Awards, and sparked a cultural phenomenon that dominated young-adult entertainment in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Bella Swan, a clumsy and introspective seventeen-year-old, leaves her mother's home in Phoenix to live with her father Charlie, the police chief of Forks, Washington. She struggles to adjust to the constant rain and small-town life, but her world shifts when she sits next to Edward Cullen in biology class. Edward is unnaturally pale, impossibly beautiful, and seems to recoil from Bella with undisguised hostility. Intrigued and hurt, Bella becomes determined to understand him.

After Edward saves her from a van accident by stopping the vehicle with his bare hands, Bella researches local legends and eventually forces a confession from Edward: he and his family are vampires. The Cullens are a unique coven that abstains from human blood, feeding only on animals. Edward, turned in 1918 during the Spanish flu epidemic, can read minds but finds Bella's thoughts inaccessible. He admits her blood smells irresistible to him, yet they fall deeply in love.

Their relationship faces immediate danger when three nomadic vampires, James, Victoria, and Laurent, arrive during a baseball game played in a thunderstorm. James, a tracker, becomes obsessed with hunting Bella. The Cullens protect her, leading to a confrontation that forces Bella to flee, but James eventually captures her in Phoenix. Edward and the Cullens rescue her, and James is destroyed, but Victoria escapes, vowing revenge.

In the second film, Victoria continues to hunt Bella while Edward, believing Bella died in a suicide attempt, travels to Italy to provoke the Volturi into killing him. The Volturi are a powerful vampire council that enforces vampire law. Bella follows with Alice, and Edward is spared after Bella proves she is not dead. Meanwhile, Bella's friendship with Jacob Black deepens. Jacob is a member of the Quileute tribe, and he and his friends are revealed to be werewolves, shape-shifters who are natural enemies of vampires. Jacob harbors romantic feelings for Bella, creating the central love triangle.

Victoria returns in the third film, having created an army of newborn vampires to attack the Cullens. Jacob's wolf pack allies with the Cullens to fight the newborns. During the battle, Victoria is killed by Edward and Jacob. Bella graduates from high school and accepts Edward's marriage proposal, though she still desires to become a vampire. Edward agrees to turn her only after they are married.

The fourth film begins with Bella and Edward's wedding, followed by a honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro. Bella becomes pregnant with a half-vampire child, a pregnancy that nearly kills her. The birth of Renesmee, their hybrid daughter, leaves Bella dying, and Edward injects his venom into her heart to save her. Bella's transformation into a vampire takes three days, during which Jacob imprints on the newborn Renesmee, a Quileute bond that destines him to be her future soulmate. The Volturi learn of Renesmee's existence and, believing she is an immortal child (a human turned vampire as a child, which is forbidden), prepare to destroy the Cullens.

The final film sees the Cullens gather vampire witnesses from around the world to prove Renesmee is not a threat. The Volturi arrive in Forks, led by Aro, who secretly hopes to acquire Alice and Edward's abilities for his guard. Alice shows Aro a vision of the bloody battle that would ensue if they attacked, depicting the deaths of beloved characters. Alice also produces Nahuel, a half-human, half-vampire from South America, who proves that hybrids can be controlled. The Volturi are forced to retreat. The saga ends with Bella fully embracing her vampire abilities, she gains perfect control and can extend her mental shield to protect her family. In the final scene, she lowers her shield to let Edward hear her thoughts for the first time.
