Bella Swan, a thoughtful 17-year-old, leaves her mother's home in Phoenix to live with her father, Charlie, the police chief of Forks, Washington. The town is perpetually gray and rainy, a stark contrast to the desert she left behind. At Forks High School, Bella quickly makes friends with Jessica, Angela, and Mike, but her attention is captured by the Cullen siblings, five pale, unnervingly beautiful foster children who sit apart from everyone. In biology class, she's seated next to Edward Cullen, who reacts as if she's repulsive, clutching his nose and asking to be moved.

Days later, Edward returns to class and begins speaking to Bella normally. The Cullens devise a plan to split up and mislead James while Alice and Jasper take Bella to a safe house. Edward takes Bella to a remote mountain meadow, where sunlight reveals his diamond-like skin, a moment of pure intimacy. But James is cunning: he uses a psychological trick, calling Bella's mother's house and playing a recording of her scream, luring Bella into a trap.
