The Saturdays

The Saturdays are on indefinite hiatus as of November 2014, with no official disbandment announced. All five members have pursued individual paths: Frankie Bridge and Rochelle Humes became television presenters, Una Healy launched a solo music career, Mollie King joined BBC Radio 1 as a presenter, and Vanessa White released solo singles. The group sold over five million records in the UK and Ireland, achieving thirteen top-ten singles and four top-ten albums. Their sound evolved from pure pop on Chasing Lights to electropop and dance-pop on later releases, with a signature blend of glossy production and relatable lyrics about love, heartbreak, and empowerment.

Their fanbase, known as SatsArmy, remains active online, particularly around the group's discography and reunion speculation. The Saturdays are remembered as one of the most consistent UK girl groups of the 2000s and early 2010s, bridging the gap between the Spice Girls and Little Mix. The Saturdays were assembled in the summer of 2007 by Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor. Unlike many groups formed through public auditions, the label handpicked the five members from existing contacts within the UK music industry. Frankie Bridge and Rochelle Humes had previously performed together in S Club Juniors (later S Club 8), while Una Healy was a singer-songwriter from Ireland who had worked as a nurse. Mollie King had been a competitive skier, and Vanessa White had worked as a backing dancer for the Sugababes.

After signing, the group made their live debut opening for Girls Aloud on the Tangled Up Tour in 2008. Their first single, If This Is Love, was released on 28 July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. The debut album Chasing Lights followed on 27 October 2008, charting at number 9 and later achieving platinum certification. The album's second single, Up, reached number 5 and won the Popjustice £20 Music Prize in 2009. The second album Wordshaker leaned into electropop with songs like Forever Is Over and Ego. The mini-album Headlines! continued this direction, notably with Higher featuring Flo Rida.

Their third album On Your Radar incorporated club-influenced dance-pop and dubstep elements, as heard on Notorious and All Fired Up. The fourth album Living for the Weekend experimented with tropical house on What About Us and retro disco on Disco Love. Lyrically, the group focused on relationships, self-empowerment, and party anthems, with production from Ina Wroldsen, Steve Mac, and others.[edit]

The Saturdays bridged the gap between the older generation of UK girl groups like the Spice Girls and Girls Aloud and the newer wave led by Little Mix. They were the first UK girl group of the 2010s to achieve consistent top-ten singles in the digital download era, with thirteen top-ten hits. Their single What About Us was an early example of a UK girl group embracing EDM and tropical house influences, predating similar shifts by other artists.

The group influenced UK fashion trends, particularly their coordinated but individual red-carpet style, which was widely imitated. They served as ambassadors for Comic Relief in 2011 and 2013 and for the Youth Music Do Something campaign in 2012. The Saturdays' official fandom name is SatsArmy, though fans also informally refer to themselves as Saturdayz. The official fan color is purple, known as Sats Purple. The group did not have an official lightstick; fans instead used purple glow sticks at concerts. Notable fan projects include the SatsArmy Takeover in 2013, where fans coordinated to trend #SatsArmy on Twitter globally on the day What About Us reached number one. In 2014, a campaign called Sats Stay Together trended worldwide after the group announced their hiatus, urging them to continue.[edit]

Mollie King was a competitive skier and represented Great Britain in the British Children's Ski Championships. Vanessa White was a backing dancer for the Sugababes. The group's name was chosen because it sounded fun and upbeat. Their debut album was originally titled Chasing Lights after a line in the song Up. They recorded a cover of Beggin' by Madcon that was used as the theme for their reality show but never officially released.
