“Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon deliver career-best performances in a film that sometimes stumbles under the weight of its own ambition.”
Peter Travers
Rolling Stone

The late 19th century buzzed with the promise of light, but turning that promise into reality required a brutal battle between two giants. The Current War steps into this charged era to explore how Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse fought for control over America's electrical future. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon guides this historical drama through the smoke and sparks of invention, focusing on the clash between direct current and alternating current systems.
Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the stubborn inventor Thomas Edison while Michael Shannon plays the pragmatic rival George Westinghouse. The film examines how personal ambition and corporate greed intertwined with scientific discovery. It does not shy away from the darker tactics used in their struggle, including public demonstrations designed to frighten consumers away from AC power.

New York City hums with the glow of electric lamps powered by Thomas Edison's Direct Current system. By 1882, the inventor has established a monopoly, yet his technology faces a fundamental limitation: electricity cannot travel far without losing strength. This forces cities to build expensive local power plants every few blocks. Enter George Westinghouse, an engineer who believes Alternating Current can solve these distance problems. He purchases the rights to Nikola Tesla's polyphase motor, creating a system capable of sending power across vast distances efficiently.
The rivalry quickly escalates beyond engineering debates into a vicious campaign of misinformation. Edison fears AC will render his DC infrastructure worthless. He launches a smear operation labeling the new technology as "the death current." Public demonstrations feature animals being electrocuted to prove AC is lethal. The campaign intensifies when Edison lobbies for the use of AC in the first electric chair execution, hoping to permanently associate the current with death in the public mind.
Nikola Tesla finds himself caught between these titans. His genius powers Westinghouse's success, yet he receives little financial reward as the business war rages. Samuel Insull, a young accountant working for Edison, watches the ethical decay unfold. Initially loyal, he becomes increasingly disturbed by the lengths Edison goes to protect his empire. The tension builds toward the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where both men hope to prove their technology is superior.
The exposition serves as the ultimate stage for this technological showdown. Edison refuses to bid for the massive contract, knowing his DC system is too costly for such a scale. Westinghouse undercuts the competition significantly, offering to light the entire fair for less than half of what Edison would have charged. The fairgrounds transform into a dazzling display of safe, bright light, proving the viability of AC to the world. This moment marks the turning point in the industry, shifting the balance of power forever.
Behind the scenes, personal lives unravel alongside the corporate battles. Mary Edison struggles with mental health issues while her husband focuses entirely on destroying his competitor. Marguerite Westinghouse supports her husband through the stress of investors demanding results. The narrative weaves these intimate stories with the broader historical events, showing how the drive for progress exacts a heavy toll on those involved.
As the exposition concludes, the outcome seems clear. The public embraces the safety and reach of alternating current. However, the victory comes with a tragic cost for the man who made it possible. Tesla, the architect of the winning technology, finds himself financially ruined despite his crucial role. Westinghouse faces pressure from investors who force him to buy out Tesla's patents with a lump sum payment rather than ongoing royalties. This decision strips Tesla of his security, leaving him to live out his remaining years in relative obscurity while the world enjoys the fruits of his labor.

Critical Consensus
While stellar performances anchor this historical drama, the film struggles to balance its sprawling scope with a coherent narrative. Visuals impress but the script feels overstuffed, relying heavily on lead charisma to carry a predictable plot about the War of the Currents.
