The Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers are a blues and soul revue act that has been performing for over four decades. Today, the band is led by Dan Aykroyd as Elwood Blues, with a rotating cast of vocalists including Larry Thurston and Rob Paparozzi taking on the role of Jake. Original band members Steve Cropper, Lou Marini, and Tom Malone still perform, keeping the sound rooted in the classic Stax and Chicago blues tradition. The group continues to tour regularly, playing around 20 to 30 shows a year at festivals and theaters worldwide.

The 1980 film The Blues Brothers became a cult classic, and the band's energetic live shows remain a draw. While they have not released new studio material in decades, their legacy as the most successful blues revue act in history is secure. The act is characterized by its high-energy horn section, tight rhythm section, and the iconic black suit and sunglasses look. The band's management was handled by Bernie Brillstein, and the films were produced by John Landis. The act was originally developed under the production umbrella of SNL's Lorne Michaels. The Blues Brothers began as a sketch on Saturday Night Live. Dan Aykroyd, a blues aficionado, and John Belushi, a comedian with a powerful voice, first performed as blues singers in bee costumes in 1976. The characters of Jake and Elwood Blues solidified in a January 17, 1976 sketch. Aykroyd, who had deep knowledge of blues and soul, educated Belushi on the genre and began assembling a backing band of elite session musicians.

Their first official performance as musical guests on SNL came on April 22, 1978, hosted by Steve Martin. They performed "I'm a King Bee" and "B Movie Box Car Blues." After recruiting a full band, they opened for Martin at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles from September 15 to 17, 1978. Recordings from those shows became their debut album Briefcase Full of Blues, released on November 28, 1978. The album was an immediate success, hitting number one on the Billboard 200 and earning double platinum certification from the RIAA, selling over two million copies. It spent 27 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number one in January 1979. The single "Soul Man" peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the R&B chart.

The band's lineup featured members of Booker T. & the M.G.'s (Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn), the Saturday Night Live Band (Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Alan Rubin), and other top-tier musicians. The original backing band was officially called "The Fabulous Blues Brothers Show Band and Revue" and included Steve Cropper on lead guitar, Donald Dunn on bass, Matt "Guitar" Murphy on lead guitar, "Blue" Lou Marini on saxophone, Tom "Bones" Malone on saxophone and trombone, Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin on trumpet, Paul "The Shiv" Shaffer on keyboards, Steve "Getdwa" Jordan on drums, Tommy "Pipes" McDonnell on background vocals, and John "Sly" Tropea on rhythm guitar. Their big break came when they opened for the Grateful Dead at the closing of Winterland Arena on December 31, 1978, a legendary concert event with over 80,000 attendees, setting a Guinness World Record for largest audience for a comedy/music group performance. The Bluesmobile was a 1974 Dodge Monaco police car, of which over 100 were destroyed during the filming of the first movie, and the sequel Blues Brothers 2000 set a Guinness World Record for most cars destroyed in a single film with 103 cars.

The band's success helped pave the way for other comedy-music acts and demonstrated that blues could be commercially viable. They won the American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album in 1980 for Briefcase Full of Blues and the People's Choice Award for Favorite Musical Group in 1980. Briefcase Full of Blues was ranked number one on Rolling Stone's "Best Comedy Albums of All Time" list in 2008 and number 37 on their "50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time" list in 2015.
