Spider-Man Film Series
The Amazing Spider-Man film series brought a fresh take to the iconic web-slinger, starring Andrew Garfield in the title role. This reboot aimed to explore Peter Parker's life and the origins of his powers with a slightly different tone and visual style than previous iterations. It consisted of two films, released in 2012 and 2014, directed by Marc Webb.
The series delved into Peter's personal struggles, his complex relationship with his parents' past, and his burgeoning romance with Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone. While the first film laid the groundwork for a new cinematic universe for the character, the second film attempted to expand on it with multiple villains and interconnected plotlines, leading to a mixed reception.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) introduces us to Peter Parker, a high school student in New York City who feels like an outsider. He lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, still haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his parents years ago. Peter finds a clue in his father's old briefcase: a journal detailing his work with Dr. Curt Connors at Oscorp. This leads Peter to Oscorp, where he encounters Dr. Connors, a scientist with one arm who is developing advanced genetic research hoping to achieve limb regeneration.
During his unauthorized exploration of Oscorp, Peter is bitten by a genetically altered spider. The bite grants him incredible abilities – enhanced strength, agility, speed, and the power to stick to surfaces. As he starts to get a handle on his powers, Peter also finds himself drawn to Gwen Stacy, a bright and capable classmate. Their connection grows, but Peter's world is shattered when Uncle Ben is tragically killed during a mugging Peter feels indirectly responsible for. Driven by grief and a desire for justice, Peter creates a costume and web-shooters to become the vigilante known as Spider-Man, determined to find his uncle's killer.
Meanwhile, Dr. Connors, facing pressure from Oscorp executive Rajit Ratha, uses an unstable reptilian DNA serum on himself in a desperate bid to regrow his arm. The experiment goes horribly wrong, transforming him into a monstrous Lizard. The Lizard plans to unleash a potent dispersal agent across the city, transforming all of New York's inhabitants into lizard-like creatures, which he believes is the next step in evolution. Peter, as Spider-Man, must race against time to stop the Lizard's destructive plan, all while navigating his new heroic responsibilities and dealing with Captain George Stacy, Gwen's father, who is intent on capturing the masked vigilante.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) picks up with Peter Parker still operating as Spider-Man, trying to balance his heroic duties with his personal life and his relationship with Gwen Stacy. He's burdened by a promise he made to the late Captain Stacy to protect Gwen, which puts a strain on their romance. Peter continues to investigate the truth behind his parents' disappearance and their connection to Oscorp.
The narrative introduces Harry Osborn, Peter's childhood friend, who returns to New York as his father, Norman Osborn, the CEO of Oscorp, is dying from a genetic disease. Harry learns he too is afflicted and becomes obsessed with finding a cure. At the same time, the city faces a new threat in Max Dillon, an Oscorp electrical engineer who, after an accident involving bio-electricity, transforms into the superpowered villain Electro. Peter also has to contend with the formidable Rhino, a mercenary in a powerful mechanical suit. As Peter uncovers more secrets about his parents' past and their work at Oscorp, he must also confront Harry Osborn, who, driven by his illness and a lust for power, embraces his darker destiny as the Green Goblin.
Critical Consensus
The Amazing Spider-Man series, starring Andrew Garfield, offered a visually distinct reboot with a focus on Peter Parker's personal journey and romance. While the first film was generally well-received for its cast and fresh direction, the sequel faced criticism for its complex plot and pacing, ultimately leading to the franchise's conclusion.
