    Overview

Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s 1956 manga Tetsujin 28-go, known internationally as Gigantor, introduced a world to the concept of a young boy hero controlling a colossal robot. The story follows Shotaro Kaneda, a brilliant but young detective who inherits the formidable Tetsujin 28 from his father, a brilliant roboticist. This massive automaton, built by his late father, becomes Shotaro’s partner in fighting crime and protecting Japan from various threats, from rogue robots to organized criminals.

Originally serialized in Kobunsha's Shōnen magazine from July 1956 to May 1966, the manga comprised 97 chapters and was collected into 12 tankōbon volumes. Yokoyama, who also created the Giant Robo series, pioneered the mecha genre with this work. The robot, operated remotely by Shotaro, was a significant departure from previous fictional machines. This innovation, predating later iconic mecha, laid the groundwork for a genre that would become a cornerstone of Japanese popular culture.

The series explores themes of post-war Japan, the lingering impact of war, national identity, and the moral ambiguity of powerful technology. Yokoyama viewed robots like Tetsujin as neutral entities, their morality determined by their users. This foundational work has influenced countless subsequent works and has been adapted into numerous forms, including multiple anime series, films, and a live-action movie.
