Steve Biko

Steve Biko's greatest accolade is the lasting impact of his ideas. He is celebrated as the Father of Black Consciousness, a movement that empowered millions of black South Africans to reject internalized inferiority and assert their dignity. His writings and activism helped lay the intellectual groundwork for the eventual dismantling of apartheid. Nelson Mandela called him "the spark that lit a veld fire across South Africa." His legacy is honored annually on September 12, the anniversary of his death.
