Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

Three years after the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance faces a relentless offensive from the Galactic Empire. Directed by Irvin Kershner, this 1980 sequel to Star Wars deepens the conflict between good and evil. Mark Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker, joined by Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. Newcomer Billy Dee Williams plays Lando Calrissian, a gambler with a past. The film follows Luke as he seeks training from Jedi Master Yoda, portrayed by Frank Oz, while his friends fight to survive Imperial forces led by Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). Initially budgeted at $8 million, production costs ballooned to $30.5 million due to harsh location shoots in Norway and studio fires. Despite mixed initial reviews for its darker tone, The Empire Strikes Back grossed $401.5 million worldwide, becoming the year's top earner. The Empire Strikes Back opens with the Rebel Alliance in hiding on the ice planet Hoth. Luke Skywalker is scouting when he is attacked by a wampa, a native snow creature, and dragged to its lair. He escapes using the Force, but not before glimpsing the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who tells him to go to the Dagobah system to train with Jedi Master Yoda. Meanwhile, the Empire has dispatched probe droids across the galaxy. One lands on Hoth and detects the Rebel base. Darth Vader leads an Imperial assault in the Battle of Hoth, forcing the Rebels to evacuate. Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO escape on the Millennium Falcon, but the ship's hyperdrive is damaged. Luke, following Obi-Wan's advice, sets out for Dagobah in his X-wing, accompanied by R2-D2.

On Dagobah, Luke crash-lands in a swamp and meets a small, green creature who initially seems foolish but is revealed to be Yoda, the Jedi Master. Yoda is reluctant to train Luke, citing his impatience and recklessness, but eventually agrees after the ghost of Obi-Wan intercedes. Luke's training begins, focusing on the Force as a means of control and understanding. He is put through physical and mental trials, including lifting his X-wing from the swamp. During a vision in a dark cave, Luke confronts a phantom Darth Vader and, after defeating him, sees his own face beneath the mask, hinting at his inner darkness.

While Luke trains, Han and Leia evade the Empire. The Falcon's hyperdrive fails, forcing them to hide in an asteroid field. They take refuge inside a cave that turns out to be the belly of a space slug. Meanwhile, Vader hires bounty hunters, including Boba Fett, to track them. The Falcon eventually escapes by attaching to a Star Destroyer's hull and drifting away. With the hyperdrive still broken, Han decides to go to Cloud City, a mining colony on the gas giant Bespin, governed by his old friend Lando Calrissian. Leia is suspicious, but they have little choice. Upon arrival, Lando welcomes them, but Vader has already arrived. Lando betrays them to the Empire in exchange for protection of Cloud City. Han is taken to a carbon-freezing chamber, where Vader intends to test the process on him before freezing Luke. Leia and Chewbacca are imprisoned. Lando, troubled by his betrayal, helps Leia and Chewbacca rescue Han, but they are too late: Han is frozen in carbonite and given to Boba Fett to deliver to Jabba the Hutt. Leia and Lando escape on the Falcon, but not before Leia tells Han she loves him.

Luke, sensing his friends in danger through the Force, cuts his training short and leaves Dagobah, despite Yoda and Obi-Wan's warnings that he is not ready. He travels to Bespin to confront Vader. The Falcon, with Leia, Lando, and Chewbacca, leaves Cloud City, but Luke arrives and is drawn into a trap. Vader is waiting for him in the carbon-freezing chamber.[edit]
