Smaug

Smaug descended from the lineage of Ancalagon the Black, marking him as one of the greatest dragons of the Third Age. In T.A. 2770, he launched a devastating attack on the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor and the human town of Dale. Using his immense size and fiery breath, he slaughtered the inhabitants and burned the city to the ground before claiming the Lonely Mountain as his lair.

For 171 years, Smaug hoarded the treasure of the Dwarves with paranoid vigilance. He remained undisturbed until the arrival of Thorin II Oakenshield and his company of thirteen dwarves. His downfall stems from his own vanity and a specific weakness: a patch of bare skin on his left breast where no scale covered his heart. A thrush overhears Bilbo mentioning this vulnerability and repeats it to Bard the Bowman.

Bard guides a black arrow tipped with the Arrow of the Dragon-slayer into the weak spot, killing Smaug. The resulting collapse of the mountain buries the dragon and triggers the Battle of the Five Armies, ending his reign of terror over the region.[edit]
