There are no accolades to catalogue here, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Shoko Asahara received no awards, no honorary degrees, no hall of fame inductions, and no lifetime achievement honours. The closest thing to a distinction attached to his name is his placement in true-crime notoriety indices, which measure how widely a person is known rather than whether they did anything worth honouring. What he is actually remembered for is a body count: eight dead in Matsumoto in 1994, fourteen dead and more than six thousand injured in Tokyo in 1995, and a legal process that ran twenty-three years from arrest to execution. The record he left is one of the most thoroughly documented cases of domestic terrorism in modern history, and it is studied for exactly that reason.
